how come the answer is = 12 variants???

When an attribute is set to "Instantly Create Variants" it will generate all possible combinations.
Ex.
You had an attribute "Size" with 3 values:
Small, Medium, and Large.
You had a second attribute "Color" with 4 values:
Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow.
Odoo is going to generate 12 variants:
Small-Red, Small-Blue, Small-Green, Small-Yellow
Medium-Red, Medium-Blue, Medium-Green, Medium-Yellow
Large-Red, Large-Blue, Large-Green, Large-Yellow
